Perspective of comprehensive development in the 4.0 industrial age

Industry 4.0 not only has a profound impact on the production system and management methods at the factory, but is also closely related to economic and social issues such as unemployment rate, average income, competitiveness of enterprises and investment capital from abroad.

Recognizing this, the Asia Productivity Organization (APO) in collaboration with the China Productivity Center (CPC) organized a seminar on “Development Roadmap for Industry 4.0” in Taipei on August 19, 2019.

At the seminar, experts presented major trends in science and technology progress to combine with economic development goals. At the same time, they also looked at specific strategies and policies in Asian and European countries and stakeholders in the ecosystem for Industry 4.0, thereby pointing out the significance of this revolution and the the power of digital applications.

The workshop lasted five days, with the participation of 17 countries, of which 13 countries were members of APO. Opening the seminar, Director General Jang-Hwa Leu of the Department of Industrial Development, Ministry of Economy, ROC, who was also the replacement director of APO for ROC to become the representative to speak, followed by CPC Director, Dr. Eugene Lin and APO Secretariat Program Officer Ta-Te Yang.

During the discussion, participants and experts combined the perspectives of each country, industry, and actors in the ecosystem to make policy appropriate to the characteristics of each industry. It was restructured to allow participants to have a comprehensive view of the impact of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

In addition, participants also visited a typical factory applying CPC Smart Manufacturing technology. Not only demonstrating technology, CPC also introduces programs and training courses to support businesses to build and upgrade their factories into intelligent factory models, management and business methods. On the other hand, the delegates also visited the Smart Manufacturing Pilot Area at Taichung Precision Mechanical Park, operated by ROC’s Industrial Technology Research Institute, which showcased systems and technologies. It supports digitalization for small and medium-sized businesses with high efficiency, but simple operation and does not require high investment capital.

The workshop was conducted by three APO international experts: Founding Managing Director Dr. Eva Diedrichs, IMP3rove Academy, Germany; Vice President Professor Shandre Mugan Thangavelu, Jeffrey Cheah Institute for Southeast Asia, Malaysia; and Vice President for Advanced Manufacturing Jackie Tan, TÜV SÜD Asia Pacific, Singapore. Director of International Affairs Dr. Ray Jui-Hung Chien, Smart Machinery Promotion Office of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, ROC, also shared the ROC’s vision, strategies, policy programs, and support for SMEs in pursuit of smart manufacturing and enhanced productivity underpinned by technologies.
