Ozone technology in pulp bleaching and waste water treatment

On March 5, 2019, at the Institute of Pulp and Paper Industry, Hanoi, the Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association cooperated with Mitsubishi Electric to organize a seminar “Ozone technology in pulp bleaching and wastewater treatment”.

The workshop chaired by Dr. Dang Van Son, General Secretary of Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association and Mr. Takanori Miyanishi, Executive Director of Japan Pulp and Paper Industry Association (TAPPI JAPAN) and senior managers of Mitsubishi Corporation and Goshu Kohsan Vietnam. In addition, attending the seminar, there were also senior lecturers of the Paper Technology Faculty of Phu Tho Industry and Trade College, the Department of Paper and Cellulology of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, as well as more than 30 enterprises producing pulp and paper.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Dr. Dang Van Son said that in recent years, Vietnam’s paper industry has a growth rate of about 15-17%/year, in this field, there have been large-capacity investment projects, with a project capacity of about 400,000 – 500,000 tons/year; Some businesses are planning to invest in projects with a capacity of over 1,000,000 tons of packaging paper/year. In the field of pulp production, Vietnam currently has projects to produce about 130,000 tons of pulp/year and some businesses are planning to invest in the project with a capacity of about 500,000 tons of pulp/year. Some typical paper and pulp projects in Vietnam include: Vietnam Paper Corporation; An Hoa pulp factory; VNT 19 project; Project of Thai Binh Xanh Joint Stock Company (Green Peace); Lee & Man Paper Vietnam Factory; Cheng Loong Paper Joint Stock Company; Chanh Duong Paper Workshop Co., Ltd; etc.

For paper industry, technology of pulp bleaching and waste water treatment are two very important stages in the production of paper and pulp. At present, pulp factories in Vietnam still mainly use the old bleaching technology in pulp bleaching stage. The use of new technology to ensure pulp whiteness, fiber durability, minimize chemical costs and ensure the environment is the goal of the pulp mill.

The use of ozone in bleaching pulp and wastewater is a new technological research, applied by many companies and pulp manufacturers in the world, with superior features and high efficiency. Therefore, the Vietnam Pulp and Paper Association strongly supports Mitsubishi Electric Vietnam and Goshu Kohsan Vietnam in collaboration with the Association to organize the Workshop “Ozone technology in pulp bleaching and waste water treatment”, aiming to Introducing new technology, improving the efficiency in pulp and paper production to pulp, paper and wastewater treatment manufacturers in Vietnam.

Also in the workshop, Mr. Takanori Miyanishi, Executive Director of Japan Pulp and Paper Industry Technical Association, also highly appreciated the development of Vietnam’s paper industry. Currently, the Japanese paper industry is thriving, contributing in part to that by using ozone technology in pulp bleaching and wastewater treatment. This is a technology that not only helps businesses save costs but also ensure the environment and bring high efficiency in production, etc.
