In recent years, coconut processing enterprises in Ben Tre province have actively renovated and transferred technology to create products with high economic value, improve labor productivity, product quality and improve competitiveness in the domestic and international markets.

Luong Quoi Coconut Processing Co., Ltd. is atypical among enterprises actively innovate technology and technology transfer. Starting as a small private enterprise with an investment of only a few tens of millions, machinery mainly improves itself with a capacity of only 3.000 tons per year, but so far this business has more than 700 people, revenue in 2016 increased to nearly 840 billion, successfully exported processed products from coconut to many countries such as coconut oil, coconut milk, dried coconut rice, canned coconut water, etc.

These achievements are partly due to enterprises that have boldly invested, innovated technology and received timely support from the State. The Ministry of Science and Technology has assigned the Center for Experimental Biology – Institute of Applied Technology to carry out the task of “Researching pure coconut oil extracted by non-thermal technology” led by Dr. Nguyen Phuong. The research results of the topic have been successfully transferred and applied in Luong Quoi Coconut Processing Co., Ltd.

Thanks to the technology of separating pure coconut oil from fresh coconut by the centrifumous method without using high temperatures and chemicals, the company has improved the quality of coconut products by creating pure coconut oil (VCO – Virgin Coconut Oil). This product has been certified internationally (according to the standards of the Asia-Pacific Coconut Association – APCC) as well as us FDA certification for the US market and BRC food from the EU market.

In addition, the above-mentioned production process has also raised 25% of the value of pure coconut oil products when exporting. Pure coconut oil produced under the new process has 4 times the commercial value compared to products produced by old refining technology, contributing to improving the local coconut value chain. The development of Luong Quoi Coconut Processing Company has contributed significantly to increase the value of coconuts for the locality: from 40.000 VND/12 coconuts, so far the average reaches 120,000 VND/12 left.

With 7.35 billion funding to support technology innovation projects, Ben Tre province enterprises have built their brand and have a strong foothold in the international market. This not only affirms the role of science and technology in production and business in the integration period but also opens up a development opportunity for young businesses with the ability to absorb new technology quickly.
