Initial results in implementing TPM at Hong Ha Company

Hong Ha Stationery Joint Stock Company (Hong Ha Office) is a large enterprise specializing in the production of products such as paper, notebooks, school supplies, and office supplies. Although the brand name of Hong Ha has been affirmed during 60 years of establishment and development, in order for Hong Ha’s products to compete with imported products, it requires the Company to constantly make efforts to improve up.

In 2020, the Board of Directors decided to join the program to support the application of TPM (Maintain overall equipment performance). This program is part of the project “Improving productivity and quality of industrial products and goods” of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Through the survey process, TPM consultants identified that the management and use of Hong Ha VPP’s equipment still had many shortcomings such as: Machinery or failure during use; The operator only knows how to use the machine without taking care of the machine; Do not maintain routine maintenance of the machine but wait until the machine fails to repair; There have been no improvement activities to improve the equipment’s performance; The operator’s capacity is not uniform, leading to low work coordination, causing a lot of downtime when changing products or needing troubleshooting.

In order to solve the above shortcomings, the consultant has proposed to the Board of Directors of the Company, during the first period of applying TPM, the VPP Hong Ha should focus on the 3 pillars of TPM, namely AM (Self-maintenance) and PM (Scheduled Maintenance), E&T (Education and Training). The scope of pilot application of TPM of Hong Ha in this period is interlock printers and Z machines located in the Paper-Voi workshop area.

The company has established a TPM Board consisting of members from the Company’s Board of Directors, the engineering department, the production management department, the operation department and the electromechanical department.

The members of the TPM Board have been trained in general awareness about TPM, steps to implement AM, PM, E&T, how to determine overall equipment performance, and analyze equipment losses. After 3 months of implementing TPM, the company has obtained a number of results such as:

– The operator has known to identify abnormalities at the equipment, proactively handle abnormalities within the permitted scope and capacity;

Equipment is regularly cleaned, checked and lubricated according to a uniform standard;

– The company has developed a periodic equipment maintenance schedule, especially clarifying the maintenance standards. This is the basis for ensuring quality maintenance.

– The company has identified the OEE of the pilot devices TPM, clarifying the equipment losses are facing to have a priority improvement direction.

– The company already knows how to evaluate the performance of the operators, thereby setting a goal to improve their capacity with a specific plan towards improving OEE of the equipment.

Mr. Dao Trong Trung, Manager of Paper Workshop, said that since the application of TPM until now, the awareness of the operator and electromechanical operators about how to do the work as well as the responsibility for the equipment has had bars. positive change; machinery and equipment have been cared for better, reducing unexpected shutdowns. He believes that TPM activities, when maintained and expanded, will help the Hong Ha Company to improve productivity, product quality, and reduce waste.
