BSR mastered the technology of installing the mechanical shackles and pumping glue to seal pipes (Part 1)

During the operation of Dung Quat Oil Refinery, some pipes and joints were shortened due to corrosion and abrasive factors. Although leakage monitoring and mechanical integrity testing for equipment and pipelines are regularly implemented by the Maintenance and Repair Department (BDSC), there is no risk of leakage or breakdown fluid to the outside environment and this is very dangerous in the operation of the plant.

Mastering technology of installing shackles and glue pumps

In the past, all the work of repairing leak points by means of mechanical shackles and online sealing glue (Furmanite) was usually done by a professional contractor at a cost of several hundred million dong / treatment (depending on pipe diameter, pressure, operating temperature and the complexity of the leak position and due to the nature of urgent work, etc).

To solve the above problem, Binh Son Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR – the unit managing and operating Dung Quat oil refinery) has cooperated with Petroseal firm (France) to organize many intensive training courses in the field of repairing / repairing pipes leaking fluid or having their thickness reduced by Furmanite method for engineers, workers of the maintenance and repair committee to actively implement.

Engineer Le Trung Nghia – Head of the specialized maintenance department said: Personnel of the maintenance and repair committee have participated in a closed training with the program from theory to practice. Initially, students learned the general theory of computing standards and the design of mechanical shackles; instructions on how to measure, install and carry out the glue injection on common leaked locations.

In addition, students are allowed to practice strict technical requirements such as safety measures when approaching the leak site; Precautions during working with leakage system exists high pressure; Handling steps in the process of carrying out leak-handling work; In addition, students learn more about the methods of manufacturing mechanical shackles; Dimension measurement at leak points; Installing mechanical shackles in a leaked location where pressure and temperature exist, etc.

The knowledge of glue pumps is also an important part of the training. Students must learn how to operate specialized glue pumps; Methods and techniques of glue injection into mechanical shackles, pressure testing and control of glue injection process; Method of handling mechanical shackles after a period of use; Safety technology in the process of glue injection; Testing after the completion of the sealing pump job was also expertly exchanged by experts and students in the training process to master the principles so that they can be applied in practice in a professional and best safe way.

Mr. Le Xuan Trung – Deputy Head of BSR maintenance and repair, said: “Although BSR personnel are eager to learn and receive science and technology quickly, the reality of doing this job is still small, so at first it is still surprising. However, during the process of installing shackles, pumping glue to seal online, the job of teaching people should improve their skills very quickly. Leakage incidents in the plant have been carried out by BSR engineers in a safe, quality and timely manner”.
