According to estimates by the International Labor Organization (ILO), every 15 seconds, 1 person dies and 153 injuries are related to an accident or an occupational incident. On average, since 2013, each year about 2.34 million people died from the above cause. It can be seen that the occupational safety issue should become one of the top priorities in all manufacturing industries.
To solve this problem, in March 2018, ISO 45001 was born as the world’s first international occupational health and safety management system. This International Standard is suitable for organizations in any industry and simplifies operations for organizations of international transactions. The new standard that replaces OHSAS 18001 and other country-specific standards and organizations that have been certified OHSAS 18001 have three years of transition to ISO 45001: 2018 that is applicable to any organization regardless of its size, type and activities.
The main objectives of an ISO 45001 management system include:
- a) Continuous improvement of Occupational Safety and Health (OH&S) management performance;
- b) Ensuring the fulfillment of legal requirements and other requirements;
- c) Achieve OH&S goals.
Benefits of ISO 45001 for businesses
- Minimize the risk of workplace injury and illness to the extent possible;
- Early identification and elimination of sources of risk. As a result, it is possible to ensure that enterprises comply with legal requirements for occupational health & safety protection;
- Establishing operational controls to manage OH&S risks, legal requirements and other organizational requirements;
- Businesses will raise their awareness of occupational safety, encourage staff, suppliers and service providers to raise their professional standards, while enhancing their reputation. before customers, suppliers, regulatory agencies and investors as safe and reputable businesses;

- Improved responsiveness to regulatory compliance issues;
- Reducing handling costs for unexpected incidents and risks;
- Reduce downtime and cost of production disruption. Occupational accidents and downtime often lead to shutdowns of production and supply processes and, at worst, can lead to cancellations. ISO 45001 will help businesses reduce incidents;
- Reducing insurance costs because ISO 45001 ensures that businesses are operating well thanks to regular and strict management and protection of employees’ interests;
- Reduce absenteeism and personnel change rate (caused by accident);
- Achieve accreditation / certification to one of the international standards (this increases the organization’s credibility with customers and ensures their social responsibility is fulfilled).
