5S and Kaizen: Leverage increases labor productivity

It was the topic of an economic forum organized by the Center for Small and Medium Enterprises in the North under the Department of Business Development, Ministry of Planning and Investment in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held in Hanoi.

The forum aims to share Japan’s experience in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and creating sustainability in the Supporting Industry Development Program. At the same time, the Forum is also a good opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to learn and visit the improvement models of successful factories after the Program’s support. Participating businesses will have access to training programs, foreign investors and become members of the affiliate network of the Center for Small and Medium Enterprises in the North with many support activities.

At the 5S/Kaizen Forum – Leverage to increase productivity and quality by the Northern SME Support Center (TAC Hanoi) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment in coordination with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) On January 11, Ms. Nguyen My Anh, Head of Hanoi TAC Consulting Department, said that by the end of 2017, the Supporting Industry Development Program has implemented support to improve productivity and quality for more 212 businesses, currently supporting 157 businesses. After the support assessment, the program noted that businesses increased productivity by 166%, currently maintained at 188% thanks to the application of improvements.

One of the outstanding results from the Program, according to Ms. My Anh, is thanks to the implementation of 5S/Kaizen model (the model was implemented with the purpose of reorganizing and rearranging production ground in a scientific and appropriate manner. management, workers’ awareness with businesses) that many businesses have reduced costs from reducing the amount of defective goods, damaged goods, saving time in production, transportation between stages in the factory, etc, from meanwhile, improve the reputation of the business with suppliers.

5S is one of the important programs of Kaizen with the purpose of arranging and rearranging the production ground in a scientific and reasonable manner, raising the awareness of employees to the business. Kaizen is a manufacturing philosophy with a variety of tool programs aimed at improving the quality of management, reducing production waste with small, continuous and frequent improvements. 5S/Kaizen includes: screening, sorting, cleanliness, care, availability.
