The paper industry does not stand out in the era of technology boom. Optimizing production following the 4.0 technology trend, has helped improve the competitiveness, and opened up the ability to expand production for businesses.
Technology 4.0: Opportunities and challenges for manufacturing enterprises
Many international organizations forecast that implementing the 4.0 technology revolution across industries, exporting products and ICT services (information and communication technology) could help Vietnam’s GDP increase by 3,750 billion dong in the next 20 years and growing by 1.3% per year. In addition to economic benefits, technology also opens up opportunities for businesses to improve quality, diversify products, increase production, use properly and save materials.
On the other hand, in the context of Vietnam signing the Free Trade Agreements (FTA), in order for businesses to integrate into the global playing field, the requirement is to upgrade new production equipment to improve competitiveness. However, the reality shows that there are still few businesses bravely investing in technological changes. This situation is also a common problem of the paper industry.
These limitations not only affect the private development of paper enterprises but also reduce the competitiveness of the domestic paper industry. However, this fact also puts the paper industry in the “purification” stage towards a more modern and large scale. Accordingly, large enterprises, applying modern technology will continue to play a leading role, have many opportunities to expand production and promote paper industry development.
Technology applications in the paper industry
Currently, Lee & Man paper factory in Hau Giang has spent up to 650 million USD to invest in a modern production line, allowing for low energy use and very low water consumption. In addition, the pulp production line at Lee & Man paper packaging company uses advanced US waste paper processing technology with equipment provided by KBC – the most offer company providing good pulp production equipment in the world. On the other hand, the product packaging process as well as the fully automatic control system has helped the factory improve operational efficiency, while limiting technical errors.
In addition, the application of technology in all production processes is also important in reducing environmental impacts.
Speaking at the National Conference on Sustainable Development in 2019, Mr. Patrick Chung – General Director of Lee & Man Vietnam Company said: “To treat emissions at thermal plants, businesses have used Circulating fluidized bed boilers and technology for processing limestone sulfur gas, filtering dust with cloth bags, Nox treatment system … In addition, the company also invested tens of billions of dong for noise, odor treatment activitie and ensure the quality of waste water in line with regulations, with a desire to invest in environmental safety rather than business benefits ”.
